Polish trio Taraban did release this album called How the East was Lost back in 2019, it saw a vinyl release now in January this year and if you are a fan that might be interesting. The cover is nice in terms of colour scheme but it isn’t a nice cover that I would have found very exciting to have in my vinyl collection. So, the question is whether or not it is an album that is worth listening to.

“Immerse yourself in the refreshing music which springs from the cracks in old rock.  Rinse your soul with the sound of How the East Was Lost - a debut LP by psychedelic hard-rockers Taraban.” A quote from the EPK, it is accurate regarding the style being psychedelic rock, quite nostalgic with eyes rearwards towards the seventies or something like that. It is familiar, it sounds like something from the past but with a fresher production. It is a good production that lacks in the originality, and the freshness, Taraban goes for the tried and tested paths and never really dare to be exciting or artistic.

How the East was Lost is strong craftsmanship, but not impressive in regard to artistry. A trio of musical handymen that could just as well have done covers of old legends they so much like to emulate. Not that they are bad, I have nothing particularly negative to say about them as they make good songs and perform them well. It is just that new albums need novelty or something exciting in order to be really interesting. This is one of numerous albums that is pretty fun to listen to, and then immediately forgotten as soon as the last song ends, even on repeat you cannot remember the songs after they end. That is because with albums such as this that you have heard millions of times you don’t really listen, it just goes on in the background and sometimes you don’t even notice that they end.

Too good to just dismiss and too poor to be great, I wonder how many times I write and think something like that when I labour to review albums for this webzine. Too many times I think, and once again I find myself desiring some soul, some personality, and I wonder why people usually are so dull. Dull people probably love this one, it is one that doesn’t make much of anything but it is probably worth checking out if you are into nostalgia or psychedelic rock.
