So what is it that is awakening then? A doomy album with powerful, dark, doomy music and things like that is what we are getting when we awaken to the sound of Mangog – which I sort of did today. They offer lots of power and heaviness in their music; the songs are relatively varied and have a nice powerful feel to them. I really like the sound of this album and think that is a recipe for a strong album.
And it is good, no question about that – an album with a sound like that can’t really be bad. But it isn’t great either, it has one great song while the rest of them are somewhere around ordinary and I find myself thinking this is a good but ultimately rather indifferent album with one exception. The track Daydreams Within Nightmares is a great track and the highlight of this album, I like that one and had the rest of the album been up to that level it would have been a great album – just like their sound could have indicated.
But in the end I think that they are just awakening and they are still somewhat asleep and if they do it this well when they are half-asleep, how great will it be if they actually are awake the next time? It is with that final question I place this one in the archive.
