transcending obscurity

Swedish band Seedna release their new album Forlorn, their fourth one since the inception. For some strange reason I come to think of a little sphere called 90377 Sedna a small planetoid in the outer regions of our solar system with a very peculiar orbit taking it from about 75 AU to over 900 AU and an orbital time of some 11 000 years. It is a very forlorn object and cold, maybe this album is the story of that planetoid but considering their name it might be about something completely different – perhaps a dream that life would be like an hourglass where you can just turn it over and start over again.

Musically it is dark and atmospheric black metal with some splices of doom and some other stuff, sometimes it is quite melodic actually. The vocals are typical raspy black metal stuff, the production is very good and the music feels dramatic. I think it is an album you need to give time and attention to really get into, not one of easy hit songs and fortunately not a typical black metal album. It is a rather long album playing for over an hour on only seven tracks, with the second being the longest at over twenty minutes. So it is not as long as a Sedna rotation but pretty long anyway and focus lies on the atmosphere from start to finish and through this rotation we also get some variation and some dark melancholic monotony. I think the album is kind of depressive in its mood.

Not really a refreshing and uplifting album but it is refreshing stylewise, it is good when some black metallers finally decides to make something that is actually not as incredibly dull and boring as that genre generally is. Hat’s off for that. I really like this depressive, and the way they portrays a dark journey, with cold, slow, dramatic atmospheres and agonising vocals. I think this is an album well worth checking out, it is quite refreshing and relatively original as well and it is always worth celebrating bands that makes something that isn’t the same shit as we usually get from the black metal genre - well done Seedna.

As I have stated before, this album has seven tracks and they are all very strong. If I am to pick a favourite it would have to be the second track Wander, a strong 22-minute epic. I also think that the third track called Passage is another one worthy of a mention. In the end I find this to be a very interesting album, not as interesting as the little dwarf planet with the similar name but still worth giving a moment of your attention.
