Spanish band Eldorado rides the sun with their genuine groove in full dynamic frequency on their new album Riding the Sun that follows acclaimed album Babylonia Haze that was released last year. Thanks to my liking of that album I had some high hopes for this new one considering how good Babylonia Haze was, but if the cover is any indication maybe those hopes should be somewhat dampened as that is certainly not as good.

Musically there isn’t much different compared with the predecessor. We get the same kind of classic rock/hardrock with a dozen tracks and good depth thanks to some female vocals and some classical instruments like bongos and violin. The album is also relatively varied over a dozen tracks and the sound is a bit rougher as well as a bit more organic than your everyday polished modern rock album. I like the sound that I think really fit their style.

And I like the album, it is a good one even though I would not consider it as good as its predecessor. It lacks a distinct hit song and with the more finely tuned ending The Last Goodbye as the best track of the album it is hard to feel really drawn towards it even though I like it. I think there is more potential in strong tracks like Plastic Flower or the opening title track but they somehow doesn’t quite unlock that potential. Therefore I would call Babylonia Haze a better choice in the Eldorado discography but this one isn’t without merit and fans will not be disappointed.

They do well once more these Spaniards but I somehow sense that it isn’t really the records that matter, that their music is more exciting on the stage and perhaps it is really there one should experience these songs to really get the best out of them. Nevertheless, if you are a fan of Eldorado and like their earlier material you should not miss this one.
