Oh, hello! Didn’t see you there. I’m sure you’re wondering what I’m doing and the answer to that is that I’ve got this album from Hammerheart Records in Holland and I thought that instead of just throwing it in the trash - why not build something with it? So I’m building a little house for my cat with it.
What you need to do the same is: A reissue of the 1996 Inquisitor album ’Walpurgis - Sabbath Of Lust’, a screwdriver, a really big hammer and then a pen and paper. The screwdriver isn’t really going to be used constructing anything but it’s still important so don’t forget to bring one - the bigger the better.
For those of you unfamiliar with Inquisitor, and I’m guessing most people are, they started out in the early 90’s, released two demos and a full-length album in 1996 before splitting up and disbanding. After 17 years they thought it was time to reunite and today all original members are back in the band and to celibrate their return they released this compilation, including a reissue of both their full-length album and their demos. Everything has been remastered before it’s been reissued and put on this album, which is noticeable in the sound quality of the full-length at least (I haven’t received the demos so I can’t say much about them). However, the sound quality is probably the only thing I can say something positive about because the rest of it sounds absolutely awful!
The label say it’s a must have for fans of some classic American and German thrash bands but I don’t see why as the music is clearly much more similar to Florida death, but with some speeding drug in the blood. The band plays really fast and more or less every of the 51 minutes that these eleven tracks takes to play are in the higher tempo. But playing fast and playing well is two different things, which becomes quite apparent when you hear this album since it’s clearly just one of those.
The vocals are performed by Alex Wesdijk and they sound very similar to those annoying, whiny sounds that my cat can make when she wants attention. It just makes you want to throw a hammer on them! Hard! The guitars are not much better, they make the classic one stringed monotonous chain saw sounds that you get from plenty of bands in this genre. I feel there is very little positive to draw from either vocals or guitars because even when they do change strings to play at (it happens, just not very often) or burst out in short solos they still have a striking resemblance with the sound of unbearable. The only thing that doesn’t make me want to kill them is the drums but since everything else annoys me so much they get very little possibility to show anything as I struggle with a constant urge of turning the album off as soon as I hit the play. Not the best of conditions and I feel the only way I can endure it is by taking that screwdriver one hopefully has prepared with and smack it right up in my head so hard it pierce my skull and gives me some serious brain damage.
So, I’ve used the album and listened to it. I’ve used my screwdriver and pierced by brain to make it bearable. I’ve used the pen and paper to write down this review. And now I’m going to use the hammer to completely hammer it to pieces. What a piece of crap! Such waste of energy to rerelease something like this. They call it death/thrash… I call it death trash!
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang…
