I have seen Edguy live twice once back during the Mandrake tour in 2001 and then the other time this year at the Rockweekend in Kilafors and I can state that the band has evolved their live act quite a bit since 2001 and that Tobias Sammet speaks a lot during the live acts, it seems like sometimes he speaks very much. This record was recorded during the Rocked Ride tour, and it was also filmed and made into a DVD.
Musically this record is of course just like Edguy has always been, straightforward heavy/power metal that focuses on strong choruses and melodies. A melodic metal band that with Tobias Sammet’s raspy voice is quite different but still are quite ordinary, quite an achievement really and quite some use of the words quite there.
What I often notice about Edguy is that Mr Sammet tend to talk quite a lot, quite a lot of bullshit really which kind of detracts from the songs on the CD, maybe the DVD version when you see the band it is not as annoying with all the talking. But for the CDs it is kind of boring with all the talk.
It feels a bit like there is most of the time more talk than music, it is too much of crowd pleasing and too much talk for my taste when I am to listen to this. Every song is interrupted and then there is talk between songs and more stuff like that which is a pity since when the band finally plays a bit of the song it is quite good.
I note that the crowd was quite good at this show, I suppose there is some trickery on the mixing but that is common and even if it was the crowd sounds rather impressive. The fact is that the band is good at pleasing the crowds and they work well to see live or on DVD but on a record it does not work as well and I find myself a bit disturbed by all the talk.
Still there are some funny things and this live record is rather decent despite all the talk.
