It is the seventh album from Schwarzer Engel, it is aptly named Sieben. It is a band that I haven’t really been much impressed by, not until they released the Sinnflut EP with that extremely catchy and great title track. The previous two albums I had reviewed didn’t impress me much at all. Sinnflut was also a track on the great album Kult Der Krähe that preceded this album a few years ago, it had a few really catchy tracks and was a quite impressive album despite the fact that the second half of the album is far less interesting than the first half, all the greatest tracks or on that opening half of the previous album.

Sieben kind of ties back to the previous album with its cover, that is both simple and elegant. And it is also similar from the stylistic perspective with dark gothic metal sung in German with songs of a fairly catchy nature. The slightly more upbeat style of this album with synths spreading light to the dark and heavy gothic metal makes it feel a bit fresher than the predecessor. The sound is quite dynamic, the spacing of songs clever, and the playing time very sensible. Sieben could be the best written album yet by Schwarzer Engel, I think it is the best one of those that I have reviewed.

There is a similar kind of catchiness to Sinnflut in tracks like Teufel but there is also more depth and more interesting songs throughout from the beginner VII to the ending Endzeit. They found something with Sinnflut, and they have further evolved that into something interesting, and now they have gone from being a rather irrelevant band into one that I am curious to hear what they have to offer next. They tell their stories in a great way, and like the previous album that I still return to this is an album that I will keep listening to when I have done this review. It might not have quite the same peaks as Kult Der Krähe, but unlike said album it is interesting all the way to the end.

I recommend this one, it is great. It may be the Magnum Opus of the band, and I really enjoy listening to it. If you like what Schwarzer Engel did before, you will adore this one – I think that everyone should have a closer look at this one as it is a great album, and you will be missing something if you don’t listen to it.
