I reviewed Oversense a few years ago, their album The Storyteller got a middle rating for being a typical power metal album. Now they return with Egomania that certainly looks interesting and apocalyptic, I took on it immediately, and then never got around to listen to it as other albums were always more appealing to select. One of the criteria that is easy to sue when rating an album is how often you think about and want to play it, I have seen Oversense in my playlist of albums to review every day for over six months, even though I have played it, it is never an album I feel like playing. I find it relatively entertaining when I listen to it, but perhaps the lack of identity and memorability is what keeps me from listening. Recently I have forced myself to play this album so I can delete it, so here is what I found:

It is the same style as the previous album, they have a social media profile with a decent amount of followers as the new guitarist – at the same time they do negativity on social media and its profiles. The apocalyptic look of the cover doesn’t reflect in the music that is typical European power metal, I can’t say if it is reflected in the lyrics as I find it hard to listen to lyrics as singer Meyer sings a bit unclear. And he isn’t a brilliant singer either, average maybe. The sound is modern and pretty powerful, the songs are catchy and melodic, the variation is not enough to keep a listener interested for 55 minutes, that might be another reason for it being a hard album to want to listen to.

Good enough, solid album, these are my sentiments when writing this review and waiting for the album to end so I can focus on the next. It isn’t really an album that catches my undivided attention, it is nice in the background, but it isn’t one that I would sit down and just listen to, it is not good enough. I don’t think this album is exciting, it isn’t creative, it isn’t interesting, it doesn’t stand out in any regard, just a typical album, like a wheel on a car or something like that. Egomania is more making up the numbers than alluring fans to listen, the power metal genre has so many more interesting albums to enjoy if you like that kind of music.

I may come out slightly negative, but that isn’t just towards Egomania, the problem is that these albums just keep coming and coming, and they keep diluting everything with averageness and the gems are getting increasingly hard to find. Since 2018 we have reviewed 21 albums with a rating of 6 or better, and at the same time about 550 with a rating of 4, this will be one more of them. Perhaps you can understand why one loses a bit of hope, this is fine enough to listen to, but the problem is that there are coming several albums that are just as fine every day. My conclusion is that if you like The Storyteller you will like this one as well, they are about the same.
