Sometimes a dive seems to be going on forever, like when diving into the workday that seems to go on forever. It is probably not what inspired the name of Belgian band Endless Dive, who are releasing their second album called A Brief History of a Kind Human, something of an oxymoron that title. The first album by the band came in 2019 and a few years before that they released a self-titled EP to start out their release career. So, what about this one, is the endless diving as exciting as it would appear?

Well, is kind of like taking to the depths, the muted atmosphere of post-rock takes us deep into the nature of a kind human. But it is more like a reconnaissance dive rather than actual exploring, we never really take to the ultimate depths or explore the more exciting aspects the style has to offer. It is kind of more surface than depth, kind of like building an underwater house in Sims where it looks like there is a lot of fish and stuff when you look from above, but when looking at it from below there is nothing. It is two-dimensional when it should be three-dimensional, kind of like this album.

It is good, relaxing, fine to listen to. But it lacks the excitement, I guess it is like that dive is in a pool rather than in an ocean full of life. And for background music it is just fine, but I find that I would have wanted more dynamics, more danger, more adventure. It is an album that doesn’t make much of an impression and eventually I find myself not that immersed in what I am listening to.

It may be worth exploring, especially if you like the instrumental post-rock kind of music. But don’t expect anything profound, or dramatic. It is a fine piece of background music, white noise or whatever you call music that is good but never really grabs your attention. I was expecting an endless dive to contain more than this, it feels a little like they waste their very high potential.
