The band Veritas is compared with the likes of Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Queensrÿche, giants in the field of the progressive metal genre. But are they really giants themselves? That is the question when we are taking on their debut album, apparently it is highly anticipated, I didn’t anticipate so I have to take their word for it. It is a cool artwork with the reaper enjoying some great weather, that is a pretty impressive look. So, how about the music then? I al not so sure about the comparisons with said bands.

Retro rock or retro metal, that is how this album could be described. Classic heavy rock or metal akin to something from the eighties, I even think it sounds authentically dated. Classic eighties singer, pretty ordinary singer at that. It all sounds quite nostalgic, not much depth, pretty typical variation for a classic heavy metal release. The playing time is quite long, around fifty minutes split in fourteen tracks – that is a little bit much as they do not really offer very much in terms of excitement or fresh ideas.

Overall, I can’t really complain too much about this album, it may not be fantastic, but it builds on nostalgia and it might appeal to many people. This nostalgia is fine for a while, but I grow tired of it quickly, the lack of fresh ideas is tiring in the longer run – I like a new album to feel fresh and exciting, I think it should be surprises. It sounds a little too dated for me, and perhaps that comparison with favourite bands let to me expecting something that this album never could have lived up – it may have been somewhat unfortunate that I happened to read about the album before listening to it.

If you are into the nostalgia then it might be something for you, something to enjoy for a while. I miss the best songs; more hits could have helped – it is pretty decent to listen to but in the end it is a pretty forgettable album that doesn’t make much of a mark. It is destined to be forgotten, if it isn’t already.
