Phase Three is what DeVicious calls the new album, it is the third in the band’s career. And they have been quite diligent with one album per year since 2018; I have this one reflection about that and that is that they probably should have done less albums and focused more on doing great songs. Like Firefly, the greatest song on this album and probably the only really good one – the cover is better than the other songs on this album, but I think it is an album that makes the listener happy.

It is the same style as the previous two albums, excellent craftsmanship and pretty poor artistry. The production is good, the singer is good, the songs are catchy and quite happy in their constitution. The twelve tracks don’t offer much in terms of variation or depth, and it is pretty uninteresting from a creative standpoint. The playing time is quite sensible and that is a good thing, at least it isn’t too long, and the positive mood might be a good thing these days.

Phase Three is a showcase of good craftsmanship, it presses the right buttons and is easy to like. There is nothing really negative about it, other than the fact that it offers absolutely nothing we haven’t heard before, and it is not better that many of those things we have heard before, it feels kind of like the same album as the previous two, one or two really strong songs in an otherwise bland showcase of missing creativity.

To be great an album needs to be either creatively exciting or exceptionally good, preferably both – this album is neither. It is a pretty good album and it is fairly enjoyable to listen to, but it doesn’t really stand up too well to closer scrutiny as the lack of imagination and ideas becomes really tiresome, really fast. DeViocious makes a solid effort but it isn’t very memorable.
