You could say that the title of the new Battlesword album was a bit prophetic, released around the same time as the first people were infected by this very famous virus that has now killed a swindling 30 000 people out of the almost 8 000 000 000 that lives on the planet. And Death Cometh Upon Us is the fourth album by the German band that started back in 1999 and released their first EP in 2001 and first album 2003.

Melodic death metal is the genre, inspired by the Scandinavian stuff both the more modern stuff and old-school. It is an album that doesn’t offer much surprises, the vocals are average and the same is true for the sound. The album seems to be a little bit on the long side, perhaps due to the lack of variation or the lack of dynamics and fresh ideas – the sense is that it is long even though it is just over forty minutes.

This is a pretty decent album overall; the songs are okay, and nothing is terrible. The trouble is that nothing is brilliant or great, it kind of works without standing out. I miss a strong hit song and the songs also tend to just melt together and in the end it doesn’t leave much of an impression. It is an album that you forget the minute it ends; I would say that it is quite forgettable.

You might find it to be a fairly agreeable album if you like the melodic death metal genre, but there is a fairly equal chance that you will find this album pretty uninteresting. There are sharper swords out there and I probably wouldn’t use this one in battle, and when death cometh upon us there are more interesting albums to listen to.
