When All Just Were is the debut album by Hungarian trio Voltak, and it is an album that was released quite a while ago. It has a distinctive cover painting and it seems that the band is slightly odd; they released a single on floppy disk, who can even play such a thing these days? And can you really fit a song of any decent quality on such a disk? The storage space is quite limited on those, and I don’t have the equipment to read a floppy disk nowadays so that single will not be played – perhaps it will be worth something in the future, it is limited to fifty copies. But enough of that disky stuff now, you say and I agree so let us move on to this album.

Voltak’s music can be described as alternative rock, post-punk or indie rock, or a combination of them like alternative indie post-punkrock or something. Relatively melodic and fresh sounding, perhaps a little bit darkish but also hopeful – I think that the cover art is pretty telling of what it is that is being offered on this album. The production is relatively good but nothing really outstanding and it has a DIY feel to it, it has a fairly fresh sound without really breaking outside the boxes. The vocalist is a good match for this kind of music, not brilliant in his own right but in combination with this music it is very good. The tracks number up to twelve and they show pretty good variation and the playing time is sensible enough, it all sums up to a solid production.

When All Just Were is a pretty good album, pretty fresh and I think it should work quite well amongst the fans of this kind of music. What I am missing is a distinctive hit song, something that really stands out and makes me want to return to the album, something really memorable is amiss. But besides that lack of memorable tracks I can’t find much that is negative with album, I like it and think that it shouldn’t be too easily dismissed without giving it a chance.

So, if you enjoy the alternative stuff, the post-punk or things like that, there is a good chance that you will find this album to be really good. Overall I think that it is an album that could be worth checking out because there is a decent chance that you will like it.
