The Deep, wasn’t that a book by Peter Benchley, a book that subsequently ended up as a movie – a mediocre movie. The fifth album by Swiss band Soulline was given that name but I doubt the theme is based on the book, or movie but the album is about as mediocre as the movie. The artwork is a little it boring but the logo is pretty good, but I am not so sure that it is worth the time it takes to play through this album.

Melodic death metal is what it is, melodic death metal with a touch of hardcore. It is a rather common style nowadays, often called metalcore. The vocals are growled as well as more standard clean vocals, the growls are pretty dull and the clean vocals are pretty average. There are some catchy choruses, some distinct melodies, and there are no surprises but rather a pretty predictable album that doesn’t show much variation and a production that is fine but doesn’t really make you take notice.

This album isn’t too bad but it isn’t too good either, it is a fairly mediocre album with fairly mediocre songs. There are a few highlight choruses that are catchy as hell and some melodies that are quite good as well but most of it is ordinary and dreary – especially the growly vocals that can be described as pretty boring. It is difficult to see that this is an album that will have much of a reach; perhaps you will find it appealing if you enjoy hardcore infused melodic death metal but I am not sure that the album will have a wide appeal.

There isn’t much depth in the album called The Deep and perhaps I should just throw it into the deep, but that could be bad for the fishes and the environment down there in the depths. So the best thing is probably to avoid this new album by Soulline and find something a bit more interesting, there are many better melodic death metal albums to choose from – this album is only good if you haven’t heard anything from the genre before.
