Classic death metal is what it is, it is built to the same format as the countless bands that exist in that genre. There are no surprises, we get the typical kind of vocals, guitars, drums and what have you – pretty standard songs for a death metal album as well. The usual variation is what we are getting over the tracks as well and I can’t say that there is much, if anything that sets these guys apart from countless other death metallers. But they do keep it short with a playing time a little short of the forty-minute mark.
It is okay death metal but it is also rather boring. I mean, death metal has been done by many bands for a long time, even this band has thirty years in the baggage, and when something has been done many times for a long time it needs to be renewed. Regurgitating the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again with the same kind of singer, the same songs and same themes is just boring and this album is boring. If you enjoy death metal of the classic type and fear what is different you might find this to be very interesting, otherwise there are better choices out there – in this genre or otherwise.
The lack reviews I found when searching for this album on the web could be an indicator that this album doesn’t fall into favour with too many, I know that it doesn’t with me. It is okay but also boring and forgettable. Fans of the death metal genre might see it somewhat differently though and if you are one of those you should have a look at the album but don’t hold your breath. In the end I think that Summoning the Circle is a bit of an obscenity in that it is obscenely uninteresting.
