A shortcut to insanity, that’s a good road to take I suppose. Lightsabres sounds like something Star Wars-ish but there isn’t any sabre rattling or anything like that. Behind that moniker hides a Swedish one-man thing, although he has help from a drummer for this album. Lightsabres released their debut album in 2013 and has managed four before this one, at least if I look at the releases on the bandcamp site. It comes in cassette and vinyl as well as the digital format. The artwork looks a bit amusing with an autopsy and a logo that looks quite a lot like something from the extreme metal genre. So what about the music then?

Stoner or grunge is a description to use, kind of DIY I suppose, a bit punkish even. A wide description of genres can be used to describe this kind of music, almost like a lightsabre duel featuring Yoda or some other irrational fencer. It is also described in terms like Beck playing black metal or The Ramones jamming with Nirvana. The mail that accompanies also describes A Shortcut to Insanity as ten tracks of spunk and pomp – sounds like fun. Good thing is that the album is kept short, 37 minutes is what it plays for and the variation is pretty much okay. Cheap production and pretty good vocals, I would say that it has a fairly fresh sound – nothing unique but relatively fresh.

Good album, that is my reflection after playing through it several times. Pretty fresh sound with good energy, sure it is built on many well-known elements but still with a quite personal style – that’s always a positive thing. Quite an entertaining album I think, with good songs and good energy. I think all the songs are good but none of them stand out either from a positive or negative standpoint. It is a solid and fairly enjoyable effort; I like this album and think that it probably will go down well with many music fans.

Definitely at least as agreeable as a sabre fight or a shortcut to insanity, things that should be a part of every person’s life. It is an album for those of you who enjoy the rawer and rougher productions; if you are one of those you will probably find this to be an appealing album. And with those things written there is not much else to say than concluding that it is a good showcase of spunk and pomp.
