The Trial written by Kafka, the writer is a favourite book of mine so naturally a band called Kafka has to be interesting – or does it? This album is their debut album and judging by the pretty cool artwork it is an album with a darker theme. The band members are just letters, no names there – perhaps they like to be anonymous, but they are from Greece. According to the press material they are playing blackened hardcore, and they do it really well.

Hardcore of the blacked kind but less chaotic than much of their peers, the music is quite diverse and along with blastbeats and headbanging energy they add nuances of melody and depth. It makes the album quite interesting from a creative point of view. Decent variation and contrary to much hardcore it is an album that shows nuances and depth, that isn’t what we get everyday. The production is pretty good, not fantastic but very solid and the variation is good with sensible playing time, the six tracks just fly by quite quickly.

This is a great album, one of the absolute best I have heard with the hardcore label stuck to it, usually hardcore is rather boring but this isn’t. They combine the blastbeats and the aggression and all those hardcore elements with more melodies and some strong song-writing. So it is a really impressive debut album, it offers strong songs and impressive musical ideas. A good creative album in a genre that usually doesn’t show much in terms of creativity and fresh ideas, that is impressive in its own right and this is certainly an album that should appeal to most people who enjoy the heavier stuff.

Kafka makes an album you really should have a look at, otherwise you might find yourself in a trial for being a moron – or at for being without a decent taste in music. That of course means that you ought to have a look at this little album as it is a rather great one. I certainly have enjoyed listening to it and I think you could enjoy it too.
