hypnotic dirge
The style is dark, doom is probably the best way to describe it but the music contains elements of black metal, some acoustic stuff and post rock, things like that. Slow tempo, decent production, not much variation, it is an album that slowly moves forward but with good depth keeping the long playing time fairly interesting. There are five tracks on the album and they play for close to an hour so I guess you have already deduced that the tracks are long, 60 % are over ten minutes long.
I think that the album is good; all tracks are good with depth and all. It is not fantastic though, and they are not really breaking much new ground in terms of musical ideas. But it is a solid effort and I have enjoyed playing it quite a few times now and I am sure that those more into the doomier stuff will enjoy this album more than I have done. And it might not only be those into the doomier stuff as well, I am sure that this album could have a relatively wide appeal, I say relatively as the lack of hit material will always be detrimental in terms of reach as the vast majority of people like simplistic hit songs and there are none like that on this album.
If you like the doomier stuff I advice that you have a look at this album, there is a good chance that you will like it. As a critic I have to point out that it isn’t an album that will make its way into the list of the best albums of the year or a list of the finest albums written but it is a strong solid album that works well for those who will hear it. So Il Vuoto may not break new ground but I am fairly sure that those buying Vastness won’t be disappointed.
