The world is conspiring when Birdeatsbaby release the fifth album that they have given the title The World Conspires. It is an album with artwork from steampunk artist Jack Flamel who is considered a legend in his field, and the British band has managed to squeeze in fifteen tracks. This band’s story begun little over a decade ago and at least they have a funny name, perhaps more birds should eat babies to keep the population under control. Perhaps that is the thing the world is conspiring about that new breed of birds that will change everything, somehow I doubt that it is a theme of the album.

Progressive rock, a bit of punk and orchestral stuff, quite original in terms of style and not quite fitting in one box, is how I would describe the style of The World Conspires. The vocalist has a strong passionate way of singing; I think that she is very good. The production is strong and emphasise the noir atmospheres and the many nuances the band use to paint their soundscapes. Fifteen tracks is perhaps a little much, the album is a tad on the long side with so much music but with strong variation it is less of a problem than it would have been on a similarly long album by a standardised heavy metal band. So the general impression is that the production is a very good.

And the album is very good, even excellent in many regards. I think that this has to be one of the nicer surprises in the flood of albums I have reviewed this year. It is clever, quite original, a real sense of novelty that isn’t present in many of the albums I hear today. And it is an album that requires your time and attention, not a simplistic catchy album that is easy to like and equally easy to forget. These guys have thought about their songs and composed a very interesting and good album, and it isn’t all complex and messy, there is catchy stuff as well. The single track Lady Grey is a great song and the other single Painkiller is also worth mentioning but all the tracks on the album can be considered good tracks.

The World Conspires is an album that I recommend you to have a closer look at, it is a really good album with original ideas and great music. The only slight downside is that it is slightly long but that is not a big consideration considering that the songs that make it long are all good songs. Don’t miss this one, it is not often we get to hear original music so that alone makes it worth checking out.
