I continue to go through the backlog from last year and today it is a band that tells us of the day when it lost the head, the band is called Beggars and this is their fifth album. The band was formed in 2010 and they released the debut album in 2011, they were quite diligent in their earlier days but it was three years between this album and its predecessor. Funny cover artwork where we see the guy holding the head that he lost, it looks kind of interesting.

Stoner rock is the genre and “Beggars raw power, heavy guitar riffs and groovy rhythm section will reveal their taste of rock music, or how it should be supposed to be played nowadays.” The quote is from the press material and in a way it is like that with raw power, heavy riffs and lots of groove. Good production as well. They don’t really surprise though, they sound fairly standard for the genre, perhaps with some punkier kind of Motörhead additions to spice it up slightly. The singer is also of the standard variety, as is the variation over the songs but they keep it short and simple – something that always works favourably for an album.

With no surprises it is of course almost impossible to stand out but they make a good album nevertheless. Fans of this genre will probably find it most appealing but as a critic it is hard to overlook the lack of surprises that I see as a weakness. The album doesn’t quite grab me as a listener and can probably be considered to be fairly forgettable and should mostly appeal to the fans, the ones with peripheral interest might not be as impressed with this album. Perhaps it isn’t a first hand choice of album but it is probably good enough to entertain the listeners and will not disappoint too much.

Good enough is probably my view on this one, nothing that stands out and nothing that will be remembered. It is a collection of solid songs that works well enough to entertain a listener for a little while but not something I would pay for to add to the collection of records I already own. And I don’t really think it is how it is supposed to be played nowadays as there are many better stoner bands, but if you like what Beggars has done before you will probably like this one as well.
