Gothenburg band Unlit Face are releasing their debut album Everlasting Transformation, they have released some stuff before like an EP from 2012 and a demo that we reviewed in 2009. These guys, a trio of different nationality came together in Gothenburg to play some heavy music, according to the press sheet at least. I liked their demo so I can say that I was a bit curious about this album, excited might be a better word for it. The artwork though, it isn’t very exciting but we never judge a book by its cover, do we? But let us now look at this album by this very Swedish trio and see what it has to offer.

It is a melodic death metal album that has some progressive touches and decent variation throughout. Pretty long playing time of little over 50 minutes, decent production – not the best I have heard but pretty modern and well performed. The vocals are both growled and cleanly sung, the most notable is the growls and I don’t think the clean vocals are particularly good if I am to be completely honest. But overall I would describe this as a good quality production made by skilled musicians.

A good quality production but also a good album, the songs work really well and I think we have an enjoyable album here. Sure, it is not the best I have ever heard and maybe they deserve some criticism for making an album that feels kind of anonymous despite it not being totally boring in terms of style and idea. But I think fans of the melodic and progressive death metal should find this rather appealing. However, as a critic I find this to be a pretty average album despite some good intentions, it never really takes off and leave me waiting for a climax that never comes. A shame really but that’s how it goes with many albums and I suppose it is the nature of the music business today.

These guys have many things going for them and the opening parts with piano on the first track promises much more than it really delivers and that is the thing about the album as a whole, the songs have great parts and parts that slightly let them down. I think that overall this is a strong debut album but hardly one that qualifies amongst the best of the year, I would say that Unlit Face makes a very solid album.
