“Mortality closes in. Evils of fanatic religion. 21st century imperialism. Destruction campaign against the earth. Immortal idols pass away. Cancer in our minds. In our way of life. In the veins of those we honor the most. It is in our darkest times we realize how swiftly life can end. We all die. Everything dies. Memento Mori.” So begins the press sheet for this new album and judging by that it would appear that they have a rather pessimistic view on the world, a strange thing considering that life on Earth has never been better than it is today. But I like a morose view on the world so this could be great, is what I thought when starting working with this one.

I like the energy and the groove they bring out in this album, strong production – excellent production actually should make this stand out a lot. The vocals are okay but I think they could have been better. In fact I think the album sounds very good overall with a bit of catchiness and power, although there are things that aren’t as good as well since the album doesn’t really catch my attention fully and I find my mind floating away to how an album named Memento Mori should really sound and one thing I though was that it should have more darkness – a darker sound would have suited me better than the groovy hard rock they are offering.

The sound is really good but the album feels a bit flat, and a bit more dynamic sound as well as a hit song would have benefitted this album a lot – but writing a hit song is often more difficult than pointing out that they should have done it. And even though they do not pull it off completely I would not be surprised if they get good reviews and praise for this album as it is a very strong production with decent songs, but it lacks that final magical touch that makes a good album great. And it does so despite black unicorns, oceans of blood and space travellers, which is a very strange thing.

Memento Mori isn’t enough of a reminder of death, not dark enough, not exciting enough, just not great enough, it is a good album that sounds good but it doesn’t stand out and it isn’t that memorable. I think Sahg does well and put out a solid album but you need to be outstanding if you want to make a difference these days. And although Sahg says the right things and have the right song titles, they don’t quite deliver what they promise.
