Marius Tilly is looking down from space at Earth listening to his new album Nebula Rising, an album that is his third since 2009. It is said to be a makeover of his style, I don’t really know what he have done before so I cannot really say anything about the makeover thing but the cover art is amusing and the astronaut photo on the back of the promo. The story is about looking down on Earth from outer space, something like that and I suppose we are dealing with some kind of alternative rock music with a spacey disposition.

And alternative rock is what it is, but the spacey stuff isn’t exactly in abundance – in fact I don’t really hear anything that suggest a spacey view of our little pale blue dot somewhere in the vastness of space. The songs offer anything from dinosaurs to rising nebulae – sounds like fun, doesn’t it? There is even a Vespa in there. I think the soundscape is a little bit old-fashioned but still with a modern touch. And the album is varied as well as pretty short and to the point, there are many good things to say about this album. Tilly himself sings fairly well, not fantastically but good enough.

Thing is though that not fantastic but good enough is also what you can say about the album itself, it is well made, decent songs and everything but it doesn’t really grab me and keep me interested. I like the album, I am not saying that but I doubt it will be an album I will remember some time from now – it may not be forgetful but with the amount of albums I get it is hard to keep track of them all, especially those that aren’t fantastic. I do however think that Tilly will go down well with those who like alternative rock music, and I think that if you fit that descriptions you ought to have a look at this album as you might find that it appeals to you.

The songs are generally pretty good even though most of them don’t really stand out. The opener Dinosaur is an amusing track that in a way puts a finger on how I look at most bands in the rock music genre, old dinosaur who really should have gone extinct long ago. Tilly does not quite fit that description and the third track Vespa is really good, I would even describe it as memorable. Tilly makes an amusing album, it may not be fantastic or amazing but as a while of musical entertainment it works really well.
