A downpour from the Japanese islands, from a band called Balflare a sextet seemingly inspired by some Finnish power metal. This is their fourth album, it was released a few years ago by another label but I guess this new release on Fastball gets a little wider distribution or something. Judging by its cover it is an album that deserves attention, then again it is never really wise to judge something by its cover. The question that then arises is if it is as interesting as the cover indicates or as interesting as being surprised by a sudden downpour, so let us see what it is.

Musically it is melodic speed metal according to the press sheet, and why not call it that? If you want a good musical reference you could use Sonata Arctica’s debut album Ecliptica for that. It is super catchy, almost to the point of ridiculousness. The production is very polished and the album spits out clichés in vast numbers, but in a way it is so silly that it could be appealing. They certainly keeps the album interesting for the entire duration of the album, the variation does not feel that big at first listen but it remains interesting for 54 minutes which have to mean that it is varied enough. I have to conclude that this is a very strong production.

This is a great album, catchy and great songs. It may be overpolished, it may be ridiculous and silly but it is so good that you don’t really care about that and just enjoy the album. Clearly more enjoyable than a downpour, this album is more or less as good as its cover art. I have really enjoyed listening to this album, it is great and it can be played over and over again as it is very enjoyable and has enough depth to remain interesting for quite a while. A very highly recommended album, I suggest you give it a try.

All the songs are really good but maybe the second track Before the Dawn and the penultimate track From the Edge of Time are the highlights. I don’t think there are any weaknesses, and if you are a fan of hypermelodic power metal you should not miss this great album. Well worth wasting some money on.
