In a way I think that this band’s name is something of an oxymoron since sporadics are temporary occasional, random and many things that aren’t endless. But that is before I listen to their music as it is full of sporadic things and oxymorons, and I have to say that it is hard not to be engulfed by the music being offered on An Endless Sporadic’s second album Magic Machine. It features a number of great musicians and a number of instruments both common and not so common just like the way they perform their music in ways that are both common and uncommon.

It is difficult to describe exactly how they sound as they span a great spectrum of musical influences but I think progressive rock is a title that can be used as that is what they offer. And not the predictable copycat music that usually comes under that moniker but something completely unpredictable, like a crazy musical trip through your own mind where time, space, distance, everything just blend together into a colourful world of you own making. Kind of like an LSD trip but with considerably less risk and maybe not quite the same but you get my drift. It is unpredictable and fresh, we don’t get many such albums, which makes this a great one that I at first held as competition for the best of the year but due to some parts I find less appealing I don’t think they are quite there – but they are close.

Fifty minutes disappear quickly when you are playing Magic Machine as you are captured by its music and kind of forget the world around you for a while. It may not be an album of hit songs but a carefully thought out package where almost everything feels exciting and interesting. It is music for those who think, those with imagination and those who like music that doesn’t sound like a pale copy of a copy of another copy, this is interesting and fresh music. Of course it draws influences from all around and you can hear those influences like they have parts that sounds like classic video game styled melodies and classical folkish stuff as well as classic progressive rock but all in all I think they have rather unique and personal style and that they are an exciting outfit that is well worth checking out if you are tired of the stuff that usually plague the mainstream of music today.

Trying to describe what we get with words is impossible when it comes to most music but trying to do it with this is clearly something more suited for Ethan Hunt than myself. But I can describe it as a great mixing together of musical styles and influences as well as musicians and stop at that. I can also point out that I recommend you give this a spin in your music machine, as it will upgrade it to a magic machine.
