casus belli musica

Russian Theory speaking of Global Electrification is what this album is all about. An album dedicated to a soviet engineer who was very prominent in building and working with hydro power plants, and also a relative to the man behind this project. As Soviet, the USSR, isn’t really any interest of mine and the renewal of that thinking under the awful man Putin doesn’t really make one have a particularly positive view upon things and stories about that past even though the man himself probably was a decent person he was still working for one of the worst regimes in the 20th century. Even so, as a reviewer I have to stay objective so it was fortunate that I didn’t know any of this before listening to the album.

Ambient/Industrial is what the label describes this as and why not? It is and album of sounds more than one of music. There are sounds like water dripping, construction and such things; maybe they are building hydro power plants? There are some musical touches and spoken words but I would more describe this as a sound installation than a musical album. It is more a piece of artwork in sound than a rock album. 48 minutes where most of it is sound and it is built on a monotonous framework.

On Hallowed we review music and not sound art or sound installations. There are some redeeming musical features and the spoken words are interesting but as a whole it is kind of a pointless album for anyone who likes music. Had he built a more musical construct, like a concept album, it would have been much more interesting. I am not very impressed and in many regards it is pretty painful to listen to this album as many sounds are irritating and very monotonous, there are 48 minutes where much sound appear but not much happens and it is difficult to manage to sit through the album in its entirety.

I don’t believe our readers are the target audience and I doubt anyone of them will find this album particularly agreeable. So, not really my cup of tea, I would rather describe this as a method of torture than an album I want to listen to. It might be something for that Putin fellow to use in his attempts at global domination? I think we can safely overlook this album and turn our sights elsewhere if we want something new and interesting to listen to.
