Spring is an album of progressive rock – very much in the vain of the similar bands and Pain of Salvation. For those of you who have not heard said bands it is progressive rock, pretty long structures, melodic, complex melodies, not particularly heavy – and also contrary to what the genre is about it is not very diverse and varied. The sound is really good though; I would describe this as an excellent production. The vocalist isn’t the as strong as the one on the previous album and I wouldn’t say that they have really taken any kind of step since that first album, it is more or less the same with some minor differences.
I wasn’t a fan of the first album, and I would not say that they have taken a step forward since then – rather the opposite in fact. The same issues that I had with the debut album, I have with this one, and they are stronger this time. There are no highlight songs, the singer is boring, there is no dynamics in the album and it has no soul or feel. It feels overworked, like they have focused all efforts on the sound and none on the songs – all sound and no soul is not the recipe for success in my view. I also think that the album is too long, and it has nothing that grabs my attention when I listen to it. It is just an album that passes by and then passes in to the scrolls of forgetfulness.
No renaissance musically, and no springtime for this genre with this album. If you are a fan of the band’s previous effort you will probably like this one as well as there isn’t that much to chose between them. On my part however I would describe this as an album that doesn’t feel worth the time it takes to play it, kind of feels like a waste even writing about it. That may seem a bit harsh to say and it probably is as they do have a quality production it is only the songs that are lacking all the traits that make songs great.
