A man with a portrait in the attic getting disfigured while the man himself doesn’t age, at least that is what one can think the name plays on. Then again it may just be coincidental, the name that is. Behind the name hides a man who is described as a good singer who has been releasing and touring with a band called Eves End and with them he has shared the stage with some large names like Doro or Tarja Turunen. Now we are presented to his own talents on his own album, the debut if I can figure it out correctly from what I can find. But what about it, this Gone album? It is said to have ten songs, and two poems that has been written and arranged by Grey. It all sounds fascinating and the cover looks pretty cool as well, so how about it?

Musically it spans a pretty wide area, a bit gothic, I think we can describe the mood as a little darkish grey. Darkrock, -pop, electronic and symphonic elements and many different moods and atmospheres is what this guy is offering. The vocals are very good and the production is excellent, the album offers great atmospheres and takes us on a bit of a journey through a dozen tracks that offers a good deal of variation, and the playing time isn’t too long either. I would describe this as a quality production, but there are always two parts of the equation and the production is just one of them.

You also need to have good songs to back up this production, and Florian Grey certainly has that as well. I cannot really see any real weakness on this album; it has what you can desire from a dark-pop/-rock album. The quality is very strong, the album has depth and enough of the blacks to really appeal, it has the right amount of darkness to be positively appealing so to speak. Sure, if you are longing for very hard and powerful heavy metal, this may not be your cup of tea as it isn’t particularly heavy but it is varied and it has depth and great atmospheres – it is poetic and that is before even considering the arranged poems, how about that for brilliance? I like this a lot.

All the songs are good, solid and interesting – poetic. For me there is however one track that stands out a little more, it is the second track Laudanum which has a great chorus, great emotion and melodies, the best on the album for me. But don’t dismiss the rest because I like those as well, the ending title is a great way to end a poetic gothic album. I can recommend it for anyone of our readers; I think it is worth checking out.
