Nu-Metal, not very modern in sound is what it is, had I not known that it was just released I would have guessed that this album was around ten years old or something. It doesn’t offer any fresh thinking, or better cars. If you know any of the similar bands I think you can imagine more or less how it sounds. The vocals are quite drab, the riffs are nu-metal chunky and very heavily distorted which is commonplace in the genre. It sounds a bit old-fashioned and I do not mean old-school in a positive way but old and… old. Fifteen songs, that is a lot and the album is also very long with well over the hour of playing time, that is just too long and it tends to turn dull towards the end.
So You're a Mess is not the most impressive album that I have ever heard, actually it is not even close. Not bad either but it doesn’t have the finesse and the thrill or the excitement of a really good album. It lacks variation, and excitement it is one of those album that never takes off. It is kind of like a russian airplane, you know they are supposed to fly but really prefers to be on or crash the ground, not quite taking off either. The album lacks excitement and it lacks a hit song that would give the album a focal point it desperately lacks. It isn’t a very interesting album.
Dirty Curls and Cavity are the best tracks on the album, those are however not brilliant tracks either. Yeah, it is an album that is a decade too late, a 100% too uninteresting and generally lacking in general appeal. I think that most of us are better of not caring but fans of the genre may still want to give the album a chance but don't get your hopes up. So You’re a Mess is one of those albums that is too long and too stereotypical, I remain unimpressed.
