The Austrian quartet Aesta goes from darkness to light and maybe back again within the space of their debut album. A band which is hard to say much about considering how little information they sent out in their promo mail and how little there is to find on the web. But they have just released their debut so maybe we cannot expect them to have that much floating around there on the web and like many others they only have a facebook page and as I hate facebook I find it difficult to give you readers that much info about this band but enough about that.

They do say that they are a post black metal band, and maybe they are. I find it difficult to distinguish what part of or sub genre a certain band belongs to but that they are black metal is not in doubt considering that they do have several of that genres trademarks filling out their debut album. The vocals is one such things, vocals I am not a fan of as they are quite boring and sterile, soulless almost. Other than that the production is strong, solid, I would say that it is mature and amongst the better in the genre actually. Quite atmospheric, dynamic music, a bit dark and melancholic. It is not very varied though and the playing time is around 50 minutes split in ten tracks where the final one is an acoustic bonus track

I think that this is a good album, not much else to say about that really. Sure it could be more adventurous, especially the vocals could vary a lot more than they do. They could stylistically vary the songs a bit more as well. A solid debut with a mature sound, it promises more but delivers quite a bit still. I think fans of the genre most likely will find this album interesting, for you it is well worth having a look at the album.

I think you can swallow the dull vocals thanks to the strong sound and the melancholic and fascinating atmosphere. I like the album even though I think they could have been a little less cautious in their songwriting. Still, it could be worth a look, I don’t know what else to say about it really.
