This then is a collection of melodic rock songs which are not all melodic rock songs however as there are some heavy metal and real hardrockers in there as well so it is a somewhat misplaced name for this compilation but nonetheless it is one on two discs and a lot of songs. Of course there are songs missing from this, I wonder where Babe by Styx happen to go or Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey which are both fantastic melodic rock songs which really ought to be on this album. Sure Boston’s More Than a Feeling is there and so are some other great tracks but the choice of tracks are strange where the best tracks by the bands are not selected or strange tracks are selected as well and what does Alice Cooper or Europe do on this collection of melodic rock songs, and they are not the only ones that feel wrongly placed. Still the songs are good and they do work well in the background.
For listening to though, this record is just way too long, why not really try and collect the really best melodic rock song on a one hour disk, that would be something. One might also wonder where Queen went and some other bands as well that should have been on a best of melodic rock but wasn’t.
So I do think this album is useless as an album to listen to, I would not want to drive while listening to it either as it is just too incoherent for that so the only use I see for it is the same as for every other compilation, it is something to have in the background while doing something else that requires much more attention than the music. This music works really well for that but some of the songs are really great to listen to as well and for that I recommend the respective album instead as they give you a whole in a completely different way than this compilation can.
in the end though, a decent collection of good songs, too long to listen to and not enough of my favourite songs in the genre are there either so it is not really that interesting. I can instead recommend album by the like of Ten, Million, Bad Habit, TNT, Journey, Uriah Heep, Vega and so on if you are looking for some melodic rock released in 2011, they are much better to listen to than this long compilation.
I can also recommend the real album releases by Yesterrock instead, they are also a much better choice if you are to spend money on older melodic rock music. So for this album I would say that it is good but not good enough to really be something interesting.
